Alex Peña was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1995 as an outfielder. After four seasons as a middling hitter with a great arm, the Pirates put Alex on the mound and he immediately impressed. His fastball was clocked as high as 99-100 mph, and after just one professional start, Baseball America called Alex’s fastball the best in the Pirates system. As a promising pitcher, he advanced as high as the Double-A Altoona Curve (Easter League) and was placed on Pittsburgh’s Major League 40 man roster. Alex was a member on the 1999 Dominican Winter League Championship Lacey Team that went on to represent the country in the Caribbean Series. In 2006, Alex signed to Taiwan’s professional baseball club the Elephant Brothers. In 2007, he was signed to the St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A Minor League affiliate. Later in his career with the baseball skills to be a pitcher or a hitter, Alex returned to hit as a position player and signed to the Road Warriors Atlantic League and to the Worcester Tornadoes in the Can-Am League (Independent) where Alex’s bat helped the team get to the finals. Alex now continues his passion for baseball through educating, motivating and inspiring children to learn the proper way to play baseball.
